Munster Hockey

Harlequins 4 (Ross Bailey x2, Ben Roberts, Richie Gash) v 4 Bandon (Ivor Sweetnam x2, Rob Sweetnam, Clinton Sweetnam) (Harlequins win 3-2 on shootout)

Harlequins beat Bandon on a shootout today in a highly entertaining Munster Senior Cup final in Garryduff. Bandon started the game much brighter and took the lead on 9 minutes. A cross from Clinton Sweetnam was met by Ivor Sweetnam to clip the ball into the roof of the net. And they didn't have to wait long for the second as Clinton this time scored with a drag flick. A third followed within 5 minutes to seemingly put Bandon out of sight. This time quick thinking from Dave Jennings gave Rob Sweetnam time to finish past Palmer in the Quins goal. Within a minute Quins struck back. Julian Dale occupied 4 Bandon defenders only to find Richie Gash unmarked at the back post to deflect home. And Quins struck again just before half time as Ross Bailey slid in to deflect home a cross.

The second half started at pace with Quins starting to hold some good possession. In the 50th minute Quins captain Ben Roberts started a move in his own 25 and ended the move by slotting home from the penalty spot after some good work by Julian Dale. The game was now flowing end to end and at times became a bit heated but the umpires dealt with it well. Bandon got their noses in front again in the 55th minute - Ivor Sweetnam with his second of the game - a beautiful deflection after good work from Ali Smith. That looked to be it as Bandon played down the clock in Harlequins half. But there was a late twist in the tail as youngster John Whyte's mazy run found Julian Dale. Dale beat a few player on the endline and went past the keeper only for Ross Bailey to grab his second to send the game to a shootout.

Having lost the shootout in the Peard Cup Final Quins looked far more assured today. Jack O'Meara slotted home the first confidently. Clinton Sweetnam replied with a carbon copy in round 2. Round 3 yielded no goals as Bailey and Smith went close. John Whyte then slotted home as did Fionn O'Leary to make to 2-2. Dave Egner then scored to allow Palmer save the fifth to take the trophy back to Harlequins.

Munster Hockey

The Munster Senior Cup final takes place on Sunday in Garryduff between Bandon and Harlequins. Harlequins have managed to edge Bandon in the league but Bandon beat Quins in the Peard Cup final.

Harlequins women will be hoping to continue their form thats seen them move into the top 4 as they travel to basement side Muckross. Institute are hoping to join them in the IHL next year and can secure top place in their group with a draw or more against Monkstown. UCC remain in with a chance still but they need to beat Trinity in the Mardyke tomorrow.

C of I women need all three points to keep the pressure on UCC and Ashton in the league as they host Bandon. Bandon have returned to form of late recording wins to lift them to mid table.
